The 3 Best Abs Exercises
I'm not a big fan of traditional abs exercises like sit-ups and leg lifts. They impose too much stress on the spine and provide little benefit. Instead, my favourite way to train the core and abdominals is to use functional movements that preferably keep the spine in a neutral position (ie. no excessive flexion).

Eating Raw Foods and a Big Mistake I Just Made
As you probably know by now, I'm a big advocate of eating more raw foods. Although I'm not a 100% hardcore raw foodist, anyone will benefit from eating fresh living foods. I mean, can you even compare a meal that comes in a box to one that comes straight from the earth? I don't think so!
However, I do from time to time slip back into "dead" cooked foods, even though I know of their deadly powers. Just a few days ago I made such a mistake.
Let my mistake serve as a valuable lesson to you on healthy eating.

Meet Laila - Our Little 8-Week Old Mini Daschund
Here are some pics of Laila, our little mini daschund (aka."wiener dog"). We just got her last week and she's just 8 weeks old. We wanted to bring her to our family to give Jax (our 2 year old mini wiener) a companion. After all, they are pack animals. The great thing is that, so far, they've gotten along really well with some hilarious wrestling matches and some fun snuggles.

Jax - supervising his little sister.

Jax and Laila - snuggled on my stomach. I'm covered in "poopies"! (haha)

Continuous vs. Interval Running - Who Wins?
Have you ever wondered whether it's better to spend more of your time doing interval running instead of long duration, continuous runs? I know I have, and that's part of what led me to develop the Treadmill Trainer interval running workouts.
But what is the difference, both in structure and results, between interval and continuous running? Let's have a look at each one and then see what some of the research says about improving running performance and burning fat.

So if you want to lose weight and don't want to spend as much time working out, then I've got several circuit training workouts that you're going to love. Click on each of the following two links to check them out.

20-Minute Exercise Ball Workout
Today, I'd like to take you through one of my favourite exercise ball workouts. The great thing is that it only takes about 20 minutes and can be done pretty much anywhere as it requires no weights.
You'll be doing 4 exercises in a circuit training workout with each exercise lasting 30 seconds. There's no rest between exercises and you'll be completing 3 sets.

Best Diet to Lose Weight - The Answer is...
Many so-called "weight loss diets" will in fact help you lose weight but at a great price? Your health!
In many cases the health of your vital organs such as your liver and kidneys can be compromised by following the wrong type of weight loss diet. This is a common concern with high protein diets which place undue stress on the kidneys (as they filter uric acid and protein).
Unfortunately, when weight loss is the goal, health seems to be of second priority. But I'm here to tell you that if you eat for maximum health, you'll lose weight quicker (and it will stay off) then any of the latest fad diets to hit the bookshelves.

Why Eat Raw?
The benefits of eating more raw foods are numerous and once you understand them you'll probably wonder why you haven't eaten more raw in the past. You'll also think twice about eating dead cooked foods ever again.
I don't think I know of a single person who eats at least 80% raw foods who doesn't enjoy far more energy than the average person, has a slimmer and fitter body, and skin that makes them look at least 10 years younger!

5k Training Schedule - Tips and Considerations
Training for a 5k?
So if you've set a 5k running goal, then please remember that how you train may be the most important factor determining how well you do. There are 2 very important training elements that you'll want to keep in mind.
What's the best way to schedule your running workouts to run your fastest 5k yet? This is a common question I receive and it's a very important one. That's because many people simply go out and run with no structure or plan in mind. This leads to poor results and potential injuries.
Think of it as driving at night without headlights!

Is One Type of Cardio Better for Losing Weight?
Considering that for every liter of oxygen you consume your body burns roughly 5 calories, it is interesting to know which form of cardio is best for burning the most calories and; thus, helping you lose weight.
So let me ask you...
“If the goal is to consume large amounts of oxygen, then what do you think would be the ideal form of cardio to do?”
Well, let’s look at the typical options. Running, biking, swimming, elliptical, rowing, walking, stair climbing/stair master, upper body ergometer, and obviously many outdoor sports such as cross-country skiing.
So there are many forms of cardio to choose from and they all work. It’s important to always remember that. All forms of exercise will work in the long run given the right training program and consistent effort.
But we’re interested in not only what works but works what best! We want to get the best bang for our buck, right?

Burning Fat with Interval Training iPod Workouts
One of the wonderful things about interval training ipod workouts is that they offer tremendous fun and variety to your cardio workouts! That alone makes interval cardio training so much more enjoyable and effective than long, boring, and monotonous continuous aerobic exercise.
Instead of trying to figure things out on your own, iPod running workouts (like the Treadmill Trainer) coach and guide you right over your headphones, so that you don't have to think about what to do, how fast to run, and all the other little details that can wear you down.
But there are also more benefits to these audio guided interval running workouts as well, including an unparalleled ability to burn fat.

How EPOC Helps You Burn Fat
Exercise after-burn, also referred to as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), is the number of calories expended (above resting values) after an exercise bout.
EPOC represents the oxygen consumption the body uses to return to its pre-exercise state.
The physiological mechanisms responsible for increased metabolism following exercise include oxygen replenishment, phosphagen (ATP-PC) resynthesis, lactic acid removal, increased ventilation, and increased blood circulation and body temperature.
Your body can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 48 hours to fully recover to a resting state. Studies have found that the magnitude and duration of EPOC depend on the intensity and duration of exercise.

Can't Lose Weight? Check Your Thermostat!
Having a tough time losing weight? You may want to check your thermostat.
"But Yuri, what on earth does a thermostat have to do with losing weight?"
I thought you might ask that question. And the answer is that it has everything to do with weight loss. But we're not talking about the type of thermostat that you find in your home. No, I'm referring to the thermostat that you have inside your body that is dictating the fluctuations in your weight.
